JCC Maccabi Games Squads

Maccabi GB, in partnership with UJIA, is pleased to announce that the Great Britain squad travelling to Detroit, Michigan has now been confirmed. The squad will be leaving for Detroit at the beginning of August for 10 days of sporting and social fun.

This will be the 14th year that Team GB has entered teams for the JCC Maccabi Games since our first year competing in 1995 and we have always had an extremely positive response from all who have taken part.

The JCC Maccabi Games, as well as creating a positive atmosphere for Jewish athletes, aims to promote the health, physical fitness and well-being of Jewish youth through their participation in recreational and athletic activities. It also aims to introduce Jewish youth to the international Maccabi Movement, which presents athletic, social and cultural opportunities with Jews from around the world. To date, the JCC Maccabi Games is the largest event for Jewish teen athletes in the world.

Jewish boys and girls can take part in 14 different sports including bowling, dance, golf, football, volleyball and softball. The Games can now include lots more athletes between the ages of 13-16 in order to give many more people the opportunity to take part in this wonderful experience.

This year Team GB is pleased to be taking 38 athletes across 7 different sports including Football (Boys U14 and Girls U16), Golf, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Track and Field. These athletes will be accompanied by 12 adults including 9 managers and 3 heads of delegation. Our delegation heads, Laurence and Mandy Thorne took a group of athletes in the last 2 JCC Maccabi Games in Phoenix, Arizona in 2006 and Orange County in 2007. Sam Cohen, our third delegation head, was assistant Games Director at last years Games in Orange County, so we are very proud to have such an experienced management team looking after the GB squad this year. Laurence Thorne said, ‘The organisation of the games last year was impeccable and the social activities for the athletes were brilliant. We were very proud of our team and all our managers and cannot wait to join in the same experience this year.’
